1 PEOPLE’S COMMUNITY CHURCH
8601 Woodward
Detroit, MI 48202
In 1954 People’s Community Church was established in a member’s home on Detroit's east side. Later services were held in a small Baptist church on Joy Road near Clairmount. When the membership reached 600 it was necessary to look for a larger building. First Baptist Church was moving to a new location in Southfield and their church was available. The congregation of People's Community Church purchased this building and held their first service on April 7, 1957.
Baptists from New York and New England living in Detroit organized the First Baptist congregation with the Reverend Henry Davis as their minister on October 20, 1827. This congregation was among the first Protestant churches organized in Detroit. The original church was located at Fort and Griswold Streets. The building on Woodward was constructed when members moved out of the downtown area. It became the first Baptist congregation to establish a church on the city’s second “Piety Row.”
The former First Baptist Church was dedicated on May 8, 1910. The Gothic Revival limestone gray structure was designed by Buffalo, NY based architect John H. Coxhead (Some sources give Guy Vinton as the architect). The gabled entry facing Woodward Avenue is dominated by a large arched traceried (decorated with a delicate branching pattern) stained-glass window. Next to it is a flat-topped square buttressed tower with a louvered belfry that contains the entryway. The south facade, or educational wing, is dominated by another gable with a similar stained glass window. Between this gable and the tower is a flat roofed conference space with stained glass windows on two sides.
The church is notable for its broad auditorium, which is surrounded on all sides by a gallery. Part of the gallery houses the organ and choir. Wainscoting encircles the room with slightly banked wood pews carving around the sanctuary in a semicircular manner. The altar and baptismal area are raised as the focus for the congregation. The altar area is quite ornate with considerable gilding on the carved wood Gothic style arches. An ocular (resembling the eye in form) stained glass dome, over 25 feet in diameter, dominates the rounded ceiling. The organ was built by the M.P. Moller Organ Company in Hagarstown, Maryland.
